Finding a Good Pencil - Blackwing Checks Off All the Boxes!

Elizabeth Fanslow

Some of our favorite brands that we're proud to find and to stock in the shop are ones created with the mission of using time intentionally in order to slow down and give our minds a rest from fast-paced technology.

One of our favorites has to be Blackwing, a pencil company that produces different pencils and leads created with a specific use in mind. The leads of each pencil vary in hardness and finish.

Plus, my personal favorite feature, their erasers are refillable. Read on to learn which of the four pencils are good for the mindfulness habit that fits your routine. We have all 4 Blackwing pencils in stock, Matte, Pearl, 602, & Natural, and we wanted to go through the differences and what each pencil is best used for.

THE MATTE PENCIL

The Blackwing Matte has the softest and darkest graphite but holds a point well. It's the top choice for artists and doing sketches.

It's ideal for:

-Rekindling a sketching or drawing hobby to let yourself unwind

-Starting a daily sketch journal

THE PEARL PENCIL

The Blackwing Pearl has a graphite that is not too soft nor too hard which makes it very adaptable for both drawing and writing.

In fact, this is the choice pencil for one of our favorite local artists, Adam Trest.

This is your pencil if you:

-Prefer to draw instead of sketch

-Bullet journal or like to draw and write as you journal

-Want to elevate your doodle game when you're in meetings or on the phone

THE 602 PENCIL

The Blackwing 602 has a firm graphite but is still very smooth.

We think it's best used:

-Keeping score while playing cards or a board game

-Jotting down notes

-Start a daily journaling habit to manage stress and process emotions

THE NATURAL PENCIL

The Blackwing Natural has extra firm graphite and requires the least amount of sharpening. It's preferred by writers and is best when you want to be very precise and detailed.

With that in mind, these are best for:

-Detailed drawings

-Crossword puzzles in the newspaper

-Writing a letter

FYI - It's the one I prefer to use in the shop when marking and measuring prints.

We hope we gave you some ideas of new mindfulness hobbies to try out or at least a better pencil for you to continue doing what you love. It makes our day when we find a brand like Blackwing that supports mindfulness and creativity during any stage of life.

With the best tools in your pencil pouch, you get to focus on your thoughts, art, or new habit of clearing your mind and managing stress.

Stop by the shop and pick your own box of Blackwing Pencils or purchase them online - Click here to view them online!

Celebrate National Sticker Day!

Elizabeth Fanslow

It's National Sticker Day! Did you know that the first stickers began as tax and postage stamps in the 1800s? They have come a long way since then and there are a variety of uses and styles today.

We love seeing folks come into the paper shop and sift through our bowl of stickers!

How do we use stickers in the shop?

  • Brandy uses stickers for just about everything. Journaling, in her planner, on the happy mail she sends out... They adorn her YETI and her laptop. The sticker on her bathroom mirror serves as a reminder of how to carry on every single day.

  • Elizabeth loves using stickers in her daily planner and her monthly goal planner, in letters and on envelopes. She also loves sifting through the sticker bowl to find fun ones to mail to her grand babies…

Stickers decorate, make things happy, make things personal... Finding stickers that represent our personality is so fun! People also love to collect stickers when they travel…sharing stickers of our favorite shops, restaurants and coffee shops. Our stickers can tell a story all on their own!

Tell us in the comments what you use stickers for…

Why my word of the year is always... 'intentional.'

Elizabeth Fanslow

Every year I select my 'word of the year'...and every year I pick the word intentional...and there is an intentional reason that I pick it every single year. Let me explain why...

Most people start their year out be selecting a word that they want to focus on through out the year, and in most cases the word is different every year. But for me...my word is the same and that word is 'intentional.'

I have picked that word for many years in a row now and I will keep picking it until I feel that I can move on to another word because I have mastered this one. You see...being intentional is really hard and every day I have to remind myself that my actions and my thoughts need to be intentional because when I don't, I find myself feeling out of sorts and traveling on a path that I didn't intend to be on.

Because being intentional requires me to think about what I say, when I say it, and how I say it. When I am not intentional with my words I can hurt people. I can say things that might not be thought out. Things that may sound sarcastic or judgmental ...and those are two things I never want to be to the people I care about.

Being intentional with my actions helps keep me moving forward on the path I want to be on. When I am not intentional with my actions I veer off path and find myself in places I don't want to be and not accomplishing the goals that I have set for myself.

Being intentional with my love and respect helps remind me to cherish the people in my life that love me and care for me. Being intentional with my relationships helps me let the people in my life know how important they are too me and how much I respect how they support me and show up for me.

Being intentional in my own personal and spiritual growth helps me better understand how to be a bigger person in this world. When I am intentional I read more and apply what I learn in a way that helps the rest of the areas of my life flourish. When I am not intentional I can become tired, sad and anxious...making life dark and dreadful.

Being intentional with my finances allows me to live my life in a way that feels good for me and my family. When I am not intentional with my money I spend it on things that are not in line with my goals and life choices.

You see...I have picked this word several years in a row and I have still not mastered the word intentional. Because being intentional is hard and I am not perfect. So I will keep working on being intentional with my thoughts, actions, love, relationships and finances until it becomes a habit for me...a habit that makes me a better person...one that make choices with the best of intentions.

What's your word for 2022?

New Year & New Mission - Welcome to 2022!

Elizabeth Fanslow

Hello & Happy New Year!

I can't believe our shop opened a little over 5-months ago.

When I started this little paper store in Laurel, MS…my goal was to bring a nice greeting card, stationary, and book store to the people of Laurel and to those that visit this marvelous HomeTown. But over the months that I have worked in the shop, day in and day out…a new vision has come to life for me.

When people come into my shop…usually the first thing they see is a wall of cards…greeting cards, birthday cards, thank you cards, sympathy cards…I have so many wonderful vendors that make these beautiful cards. And you will also be seeing more printed cards made in our shop this year as well!

These are women-owned businesses in the United States and they make their cards by hand. I hand pick the cards that go on that wall…my hope is that there is something there for everyone. But it goes a bit deeper than that.

It’s my wish for people to come in my little shop and find a card…that when they read it…they say…Oh I need to get this for “whoever that may be.”

I hope that when you lose someone dear to you, that you will come into the shop and pick up a card so that you can send a handwritten sympathy note - because that card will mean so much to the person who needs it the most.

My hope is that when someone has done something really nice for you that you come in and pick up a card that will tell them how much you really appreciate having them in your life.

I love having a group of women friends come into the shop and go straight to the card wall. They laugh and share the funny cards with each other, and they select a few for those important people who deserve…or need them. This happens several times a week and it never stops feeling good!

And I love that we now have regulars that come in and buy cards for the people in their lives.

I love when you come in the shop looking for that perfect journal or planner because I understand the need to have that paper journal to write you thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams in. And that planner that you need to help keep your days, weeks, and months - and life organized. It’s about the creative process and I love that you get that.

We also have had several folks walk in or call about creating personalized stationary or notecards…and that makes me giddy inside! I love that people want to send notes and better yet…they want to handwrite them on a notecard made by me…in my little shop…in Laurel, Mississippi.

There is no better feeling inside for me,  than creating a set of notecards, invitations or business cards for someone…I hope they know and understand the love that I put into each order as I box them up and send them on their way. Every order is made with care and each piece is created and touched by us…and I love that!

So my mission this year, in 2022 is to help people:

  • send more letters, cards, or notes to those people in your life that you love and want to support, wish them a happy birthday, tell them thank you…or just to let them know you are thinking about them. Think about how they will feel when they know you took the time to pick up card, add a handwritten note and drop it in the mail. It’s such a ‘feel good’ thing!

  • step away from their keyboards for a while and pick up a beautiful pen or comfortable pencil and spend more time writing…spend more time with your thoughts…journaling and leaving a legacy! You many not think about it, but what if you could leave a journal filled with your thoughts, advice, or life for those that you love? I think about what my kids will know about my life when I am gone…I hope my journals will tell them the life I lived.

  • pick up a real book that will either take their minds away from everyday life…or teach them something new and help them grow. I want everyone to feel a real book in their hand and have the ability to learn from the amazing authors that take the time to write them for us.

  • get kids more interested in writing and sharing their thoughts. I don’t want our children to grow up not knowing how to write a thank you note or a letter. If our children don’t see us doing it, will they know the importance of doing it? Does your child know they should send handwritten thank you note when they get gifts? I want to help share  the importance of letter writing with our younger generations.

Because I think we all need the love of a card, the time to be with our own thoughts in a journal, and learning and growing our minds by reading more books! To help support my mission the Be Amazing Paper Company will be hosting some special events in 2022 and we can’t wait to share them with you!

Thank you for your support in 2021 – we couldn’t do what we do without your support of our business! Richard and I hope that you all have an amazing New Year and that 2022 brings you peace, love, and joy!

Use Your Planner Like a Power Boss

Elizabeth Fanslow

Do you use a planner? How about a to-do list? How you keep yourself organized? For some people staying organized is easy. They know how to do it, but not everyone is as adapt at keeping themselves organized...and to that I say...you just haven't found your system yet.

I am a systems person...systems help me complete things, manage projects, and stay organized and on track. Without my system I would be at an utter loss.

In order for a planner to be effective you have to use it regularly. Here are four steps that I use to help me manage my schedule - give them a try and then tweak them to fit you!

alysha-rosly-6GZQo28ecoE-unsplash.jpg
  1. Make time to review your planner every morning before you start your day, or in the evening the night before. When you take time to review what needs to be done each day and review what appointments / commitments you have it helps you gain a clear understanding of what you have to get done that day.

  2. Make sure your planner has a full monthly calendar. Take time to review the next month and add your important dates on your monthly calendar; birthdays, anniversaries, business trips, vacation days, and even bills that are due during the month.

Having the ability to take a full look at your calendar at one time is super beneficial.

  3. Prepare for each Week - At the beginning of each week - transfer any dates for that week to each day so that you can prepare your to-do's in an efficient manner. You can fit a whole day of work into a day that has 3-appointments and a kids soccer game...so preparing for your week is essential for success.

  4. Use your planner as a tool - because that's what it is. However, if you don't use you planner efficiently it won't be of any good to you.

We have several types of planners available in the shop - if you're looking for a planner there are many different types out there. What I will tell you is you may use one for several months and find that a different type fits your needs better. Don't be afraid to experiment with different types until you find the one that works for you.

Check out our store and look at the different planners we offer. If you're interested in one that we have, I want to give you a 10% discount code to use. Most of our planners are undated, however we do have some 17-month planners that started in August 2021, but they are good through December 2022!

Here's the link to shop and here's the code - plannerpower - to get your discount, if you're interested. The code starts today and is good through Thursday, September 9, 2021.
